I do… want to work in Hollywood, says James Sutton

JAMES SUTTON says swapping Hollyoaks for Hollywood will just have to wait… until after he’s married his girlfriend Rachael Collin.
Meanwhile, the actor — soon to tread the boards as a murderer — feels there is ‘great stuff’ being produced in this country to keep him tied up.
‘America is really welcoming to British actors and it’s a very even playing field out there,’ James told Guilty Pleasures. ‘I’ve got friends — including ex-Hollyoaks actors — that have gone out there and done really well. Never say never. I’ve got to get married first then we’ll see!’
The 35-year-old, who played gay teacher John Paul McQueen in the Channel 4 soap, says he will maybe try his luck in Hollywood in a few years ‘to see if there is any work out there for me’. But he says theatre is ‘still booming’, adding: ‘And British film is doing really well.’
In Hollyoaks, one of his darkest plots saw John Paul raped by a pupil.
James said playing gay ‘showed me in a good light’, adding: ‘I had a lot of issue-based storylines. They trusted me with a lot of heavy stuff, I was very thankful for it. I’ve come out of it with credibility.’
He is currently working on a stage version of the Hitchcock film Rope at the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch, Essex, opening this month.
‘It’s probably as intense for the audience as it is for us,’ said James. ‘I play one of two murderers.’
Lined up for some independent flicks too, he finished: ‘It’s all good, man. It’s better than working for a living.’
