Queer Eye hosts fought for matching wages, says Jonathan Van Ness

QUEER Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness says the show’s fab five stars demand they all get paid the same, so they don’t fall out.
The hair stylist, famous for his ‘yass’ catchphrase, said: ‘When the boys and I were cast we made sure we got paid the same. I’m really into that part of our story. We’re homies. We’d all feel resentful if one of us was getting more than the others. It would create a very, like, not cool work environment.’
The former high school cheerleader from Quincy, Illinois, also revealed how the skin condition psoriasis had stopped him raking in money from beauty endorsement deals. And the success of the Netflix series had also ended up costing him a packet.
‘It’s weird. The more successful you are, the more expenses you have. Like, I have a publicist now. That costs money,’ he told Wealthsimple’s Money Diaries.
Jonathan, 31, first surfaced in Funny Or Die spoof Gay Of Thrones. ‘While filming Queer Eye people kept asking, “Are you ready for what’s about to happen? Like really ready?” I was like, “I already have Gay Of Thrones fame.” I thought, “I got this.” But I did not get it. I didn’t understand how much my life was about to change,’ he added.
The grooming expert also revealed how he charmed the pants off the real-life Game Of Thrones cast despite his mickey-takes.
‘I actually got hired to groom the cast for Comic-Con while filming Gay Of Thrones. It was really random. When I showed up, the creators of the show were like, “Aren’t you that guy who does the recap show online?” I was like, “Oh, f***. I’m going to get fired. They’ll think I’m some insane fangirl.” But it turned out they loved it.’
