Why is Twitter thanking Matt Damon?

MATT DAMON’S latest flick The Great Wall has attracted criticism ever since it was mooted — but yesterday the hashtag #thankyoumattdamon started making waves.
The film, which stars Matt as a monster-slaying European mercenary in medieval China, has been slated for displaying a ‘white saviour complex’ — when a white character is shown rescuing people of colour.
Now the film has been released, comedian Jenny Yang has been trolling the Hollywood star.
Posting yesterday, she wrote: ‘THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU’VE DONE TO SAVE THE CHINESE PEOPLE, MATT DAMON. #THEGREATWALL’.
Later she posted: ‘Matt Damon invented gun powder. #thankyoumattdamon’
And, naturally, the Twittersphere piled in with more examples…
One wrote: ‘I was having trouble decorating my house, and Matt Damon came and feng shuied it for me #thankyoumattdamon’.
While another posted: ‘A fifth of the planet is Chinese but only this white man has the cunning and skills to save them all #thankyoumattdamon’.
The Great Wall is in cinemas from today
